Welcome.

Edward Hicks’ “Peaceable Kingdom”

Here’s my Substack. I’m an independent journalist, formerly of mostly right-leaning outlets. I’ve held editorial roles at Front Porch Republic, The Daily Caller, The American Conservative, and Modern Age, and written a column for the Catholic Herald.

In my own writing, I’ve reported material off Hunter Biden’s hard drive (here and here), exposed Google’s blacklisting of dissenting news media, identified a fake pro-war opinion columnist, covered the QAnon of the loony left, defended socialism American-style, published records of slave ownership in Virginia governor Ralph Northam’s family, and exposed what I believe to be part of the Fast and Furious scandal unmentioned when it broke almost a decade earlier, which led to my involvement in a clemency petition.

My commentary, reviews, and opinion writing have appeared in The Washington Post, The Guardian, Newsweek, New York Post, The Spectator, American Affairs, The American Interest, The American Spectator, Tiny Mix Tapes, UnHerd, Mic, The Umlaut, Quillette, Mere Orthodoxy, and elsewhere.

I’ve done graduate work at the University of Kansas on informants in extremist groups and housing finance, and taught courses on film and Kansas history. My undergraduate degree is from the College of William and Mary, where I also obtained a certificate from the National Institute of American History and Democracy, a program in partnership with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In editorial roles I’ve managed grants related to progressive philanthropy and economic concentration.

My work has been widely cited, including by The New Yorker, quoted from the floor of Congress and in various policy publications such as Cato Journal and R Street, and I am cited or listed in the acknowledgments of books by Ron Fournier, Francesco Giubilei, and James Bovard. My work on extremism was covered here by Gli Occhi della Guerra. I’ve been subpoenaed by President Trump’s chief spokesman and sued by the former owner of Ted Bundy’s Volkswagen.

I’ve walked almost exactly 900 miles on pilgrimage in Spain and Italy, and am an Eagle Scout.
